I had been running my portable CD player on batteries for many months and had forgotten where I had stored the mains cable. I looked in all the reasonable places, but could not find it. Rather than turn my whole house upside-down, I opted to use Celestial Divination to provide a short-cut to find the lost object, asking simply: "Where is my CD player charger?". A horary chart was drawn for the time and place at which the question was asked (London, 22nd July 2008 at 3:52pm). The important parts of that chart are reproduced below.
In horary astrology, the person asking the question is represented by the first 'house' and its ruler, in this case Mars (
). The lost object is sometimes represented by the ruler of the 2nd house and sometimes by the ruler of the 4th house - in this case, both houses are ruled by Jupiter so the main signifier of the lost object is obviously Jupiter (
). The Moon (
) is considered to co-signify lost objects.
Does the chart offer hope that the object will be found?
If there were strong indications that the object would never be found, it would pointless even to try to determine its whereabouts. In this case however, we see the strongest possible testimony that the object will be found: in short, Mars (which represents me) is moving towards a symbolic meeting (an aspect) with Jupiter (which represents the object)...
In astrological parlance, an aspect is formed between any two planets which lie in the same degree of their respective signs. In this chart, Mars (in the 13th degree of Virgo) is moving forwards through its sign while Jupiter (in the 16th degree of Capricorn) is retrograde, ie. moving backwards through its sign – and both reach 15°20' of their respective signs together, at which point the aspect between them is said to be perfected. Importantly in this case, this aspect between Mars and Jupiter is perfected before either of them aspects any other planet - symbolically, this portends an imminent meeting between me and my CD charger without our meeting being confounded by other factors. Furthermore, the aspect in this case is an easy 'trine'. This is very good testimony for the lost object being found soon and relatively easily.
So where is the mains charger?
It was certain that the object was somewhere within the four walls of my home (it had never left there since its date of purchase), so the chart as a whole could symbolically represent my home – with the various 'houses' in the chart representing the different rooms in my home. Everything is beautifully symbolic in horary astrology – for example, the significators of the lost object (Jupiter and Moon) both lay towards the bottom of the chart, suggesting that the object was to be found 'downstairs' in my home. Jupiter is in the 2nd house which represents several possible hiding places: the kitchen, the larder, the room next to the entrance, and also storerooms and cupboards generally. Jupiter is in the dry old 'earth' sign of Capricorn, suggesting that the lost object is on or near the floor. Based on these initial findings I set out to look - but having fruitlessly searched the kitchen, the downstairs storeroom and the room next to the entrance, I came back to the chart for more information...
The chart places the Moon (co–signifier of the lost object) in the 4th house which is the 'informal' room of the house, ie. the living room. With this one further clue, the charger was found almost immediately in the cupboard in the living room. It was on the bottom shelf (near to the floor), hidden under dusty old books. The whole process (from asking the initial question to finding the lost object) took 45 minutes.
